3,000 sign in for Sunday demo on changes to higher education
More than 3,000 people had signed up by today for a demonstration scheduled for 4 pm Sunday against proposed and already executed changes to Hungary’s higher education system by the Hungarian government – changes which deomonstrators say were not preceded by consultations with professional bodies – according to the Facebook page of Szabad Oktatást, which translates as “Free Education”.
Organizers said the demonstration, which will gather at József Nádor tér, is about proposed changes to the university curriculum, as well as an initiation of an open dialogue for everyone looking to help bring about change in Hungary.
A recently published draft bill from the ministry intends to terminate graduate programs for social sciences, communication and international relations, online daily nol.hu reported. Students of the Faculty for Social Sciences at ELTE, Hungaryʼs largest and best-rated university, gathered for a demonstration on Wednesday in front of the Ministry of Human Capacities in Budapest to protest plans to cut programs that would put the faculty in jeopardy.
Following an April 20 university forum organized by students who sought to express their disagreement with the ministry’s views, the ministry’s state secretary for higher education promised that the graduate programs of international studies and communication would not be terminated, but that the graduate program for social sciences would, nol.hu said.
