Kövér: Hungary backs T-TIP if serves national interests
Hungary will continue to defend its national interests through negotiations of the proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (T-TIP), a free trade agreement between the United States and the European Union, House Speaker László Kövér said yesterday at a meeting with his counterparts in Rome.
Kövér told national news agency MTI that Hungary is looking to keep its farm sector GMO-free and wants some degree of regulation for agricultural branches that may be sensitive to the opening of the market. It also wants to preserve the use of protected designation of origin. Hungaryʼs parliamentary parties agree with the governmentʼs stand on these matters, he added.
Hungarian farm minister Sándor Fazekas and United States ambassador to Hungary Colleen Bell discussed the proposed T-TIP free trade agreement between the U.S. and the European Union at a meeting on April 20.
Hungary’s foreign minister Péter Szijjártó said earlier that the Hungarian government will only support the agreement if it serves Hungarian interests.
