Daily consumer spending rises HUF 1.55 bln since mid-March

Competition

Daily average consumer spending has grown from HUF 20.9 bln to HUF 22.45 bln since the mid-March despite new legislation requiring shops of more than 200 sqm to shut their doors on Sundays, daily Napi Gazdaság said yesterday, citing Kristóf Szatmáry, ministerial commissioner for trade policy harmonization.

The growth of consumer spending can be seen not only in the retail sector, but also the service sector, said Szatmáry. The ministerial commissioner said that the government is not planning any changes to legislation regarding Sunday closures this summer. There have been no layoffs – even at bigger retailers – since the change was introduced, and government revenues have also been unaffected, Szatmáry insisted.
