Varga envisions changes in management at NAV
Hungary’s National Economy Minister Mihály Varga said that the scandals involving top officials’ banned entry to the United States last year on corruption charges and how the issue was handled, has weakened the leadership of the country’s National Tax and Customs Authority (NAV), and the body may require management changes, Hungarian weekly Figyelő reported today.
According to the minister, the publicʼs trust in NAV has been weakened and “this definitely makes measures necessary”. Varga also noted that the National Economy Ministry is planning to make NAV operations more efficient.
Concerning NAV chief Ildikó Vida, who eventually admitted to being one of the banned officials but denied any wrong-doing, Varga said that she would stay in her position “as long as there is mutual trust between her and her employer”. Varga clarified that the head of NAV can only be appointed by Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
The minister added that he is planning to replace several officials in his ministry and a separate state secretariat for taxation could be established.
