Unemployed Hungarians assigned to task of fence building

The government has called in 490 unemployed men from Csongrád county, in southern Hungary, to the local government office to assist in building the fence along the Hungarian Serbian border, online news portal delmagyar.hu reported yesterday.

The call came from the employment department of the Csongrád County government office, which stated that they had found the men work suitable to their profession and that they would be assisting in the construction of the 175-km long fence from this coming Monday.
The news portal spoke with Mihály Lakatos, a 56-year-old unemployed man who was the first to arrive at the office. He was told that he would be paid HUF 51,000 a month for the job which involves clearing the area, driving piles and carrying wood for eight hours a day. Transportation to and from the site and two meals a day would be provided to workers who would be required to complete the fence by November, the portal ads. If the individual refuses to take the job, however, they would be barred from collecting the HUF 22,800 in social assistance.
Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán recently said that the fence, which is often referred to as a “temporary measure” by the government, must be erected by August 31. The government reportedly allocated HUF 6.6 bln for the fenceʼs construction, but government spokesperson Zoltán Kovács said yesterday that the fence will now cost HUF 29 bln.
It was earlier reported that the Hungarian government used the help of prisoners in building the fence.
