The largest truffle ever uncovered in Hungary was presented to the national farm museum in Budapest, Hungarian news agency MTI reported today. The 1.28 kg specimen — just 20 g lighter than the largest truffle ever found in the world — was presented by farm minister Sándor Fazekas.

The truffle, preserved by experts, was found by one of the staff of Truffleminers in the Jazygia region in the east of the country.

Truffleminers managing director István Bagi said 40-50 tons of truffles are dug up in Hungary each year. The sale of the truffles, which go for as little as HUF 10,000 per kilogram in the summer and HUF 50,000 per kilogram in the winter, is expected to generate HUF 500 mln - 1 bln a year.

Almost 91% of the country's truffles come from the Jazygia region. About 95% of Hungarian truffles are exported.
