Tourism in Hungary still on rise in September

The number of nights spent by international tourists increased by 3.7% and nights spent by domestic tourists were up 15% in September compared to a year earlier, while gross revenues of accommodation establishments, calculated at current prices, rose 8.4%, according to data released today by the Central Statistical Office (KSH).

The number of international tourist arrivals grew by 7%, generating 1.394 million international tourism nights, while domestic guests spent 1.054 million nights at accommodation establishments in total. 

In half of the most significant source countries – in the case of the Czech Republic, Austria and Poland – turnover measured on the basis of domestic tourism nights grew significantly by between 12% and 15%, the KSH said, adding that the number of tourism nights spent by guests arriving from Germany stagnated, while guests arriving from the United Kingdom and the United States spent 1.1% and 0.8% fewer nights, respectively, in Hungarian accommodation establishments.

In September, room occupancy in hotels was down by 2.7 percentage points to 63.1%, compared to the same period a year earlier, while accommodation establishments saw a total gross revenue rise of 8.4% to HUF 38.6 billion. Within this, accommodation fee revenues (HUF 23.1 bln) increased by 8.2%, other revenues (HUF 7.6 bln) by 11%, and catering revenues (HUF 7.9 bln) by 6.6%, the KSH reported.

This year by September 30, compared to the same point a year earlier, the number of units operating in Hungary stagnated (3,024), while the number of beds grew by 0.4% (294,000), the KSH said.

In the January–September period, compared to the equivalent period of 2015, accommodation establishments registered 5.8% more tourism nights, or a total of 22 million, with foreign guests spending 4% more (10.9 million) and domestic guests spending 7.6% more (11.2 million) tourism nights in accommodation establishments, according to the KSH. Room occupancy in hotels rose by an average of 1.7 percentage points to 56.9%, while accommodation establishments reached gross revenues of HUF 303.7 billion, 7.1% higher in total at current prices, the KSH added.
