Portuguese airline TAP is cancelling its Budapest flights as of April, Péter Szolnok, the company’s Hungarian representative, told local daily Magyar Hírlap today.

Commenting on the decision, Szolnok said that last year the airlineʼs’ management was replaced, and the new leadership has revised the operating concept to follow a different strategy than the one previous in place.

Along with the Budapest route, the airline is also cancelling flights to Bucharest, Göteborg, Hannover and Zagreb, Magyar Hírlap reported. The paper noted that since the launch of its Budapest flights in 2004, passenger numbers have been increasing gradually, with 70% capacity on average.

Mihály Hardy, the spokesperson for Liszt Ferenc International Airport operator Budapest Airport, said they were only informed about TAPʼs decision yesterday, Hungarian news agency MTI reported today. The spokesperson said other carriers operate flights on the routes TAP is cancelling, adding that popular routes usually do not remain without flights for long, MTI reported.

Since December, TAP has been operating nine flights daily from Budapest, Hungarian online daily index.hu reported.
