Szijjártó praises U.S.-Hungary economic ties, acknowledges tensions

History

Economic ties and cooperation between Hungary and the United States are excellent and their joint work in the framework of transatlantic cooperation is also good, although there have been tensions between the two countries, Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said, according to a report published by Hungarian news agency MTI today.

During a presentation in New York yesterday evening, the minister said that the United States became Hungaryʼs most important trade partner outside of the European Union for the first time last year.

Szijjártó also said Hungary has been subject to criticism from the United States on a number of occasions and, while it is prepared to discuss concrete issues, it cannot begin to address generalities, MTI reported.

“American political criticism is put in doubt by the fact that 1,600 U.S. companies have invested $9 billion in Hungary and provide work for some 100,000 Hungarian people,” he said, adding that approximately 40 U.S.-based multinationals currently operate in Hungary, according to MTI. If Hungary was such a bad place, as its critics allege, it wouldnʼt attract U.S. capital, Szijjártó stressed, according to MTI.
