Szijjártó confirms EU, NATO commitments

Int’l Relations

Hungary is a member of the European Union and NATO and this clearly indicates where its commitments lie, the foreign minister said in an interview published by daily Magyar Nemzet on Saturday.

At the same time, it is important for Hungary to enforce its own national interests without "hurting" the values shared within these alliances, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said. He called the United States one of Hungary's most important allies and said its opinion must always be listened to. "But if we hear statements that hurt Hungarian people we point that out.

This I consider only natural between friends," Szijjártó said. Speaking about Hungary's foreign policy objectives, he called diplomacy a tool for achieving success in external economic relations. Hungary's strategy of opening to the East does not mean turning away from the West, Szijjarto said. Such a move would go against long-term thinking, he said, noting that 80 percent of Hungary's exports go to the EU.
