The annual inflation rate in Estonia increased to 4.7% in January from December's 2.5-year low of 4%, figures from the Tallinn-based Statistics Estonia (SE) showed on Wednesday.

It was the highest inflation rate since last October due mainly to faster rises in food (5.0% vs 4.1% in December) and housing prices (6.4% vs 5.3%), amid a rebound in transport prices (0.2% vs -2.1%).

Also, prices advanced faster for health (10.3% vs 8.8%), miscellaneous goods & services (5.3% vs 5.1%), and alcoholic beverages & tobacco (6.9% vs 3.7%). Prices continued to climb for clothing & footwear (4.1% vs 5.1%), household goods (3.7% vs 5.1%), communication (1.4% vs 1.4%), recreation & leisure (5.0% vs 7.2%), education (7.4% vs 7.5%), and hotels, cafes & restaurants (6.3% vs 6.7%).

On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 1.4% in January, rebounding from a 0.1% fall in December 2023. In the last year, the consumer price index (CPI) increased by 9.2% compared with the average of 2022.
