Russian embargo, cheap Polish apple hurts Hungarian growers

In addition to the milk and pork industry, Hungarian apple growers are also being negatively impacted by the Russian embargo introduced in 2014, Hungarian daily Magyar Idők reported today.

The past few weeks saw European markets being flooded by Polish apples in large quantities, causing a price drop below that of last year, Ferenc Takács, president of the Hungarian Apple Product Council, told the daily.

During the fall, producers were able to sell apples at relatively good prices, and many hoped that spring would bring a price increase following the storage of the fruit, however, such hopes are not coming to fruition, Hungarian online daily index.hu reported.

The president said that demand for Hungarian apples has dropped chiefly due to Polish imports, which are cheaper. The Romanian market, which used to buy Hungarian apples, also opted for the cheaper Polish import. There are hardly any buyers for Hungarian apples, the president said.
