Report: Hungary’s grape harvest to reach ‘average’ size
Hungaryʼs grape harvest is expected to be of “average size” this year, but of very good quality, Hungarian daily Magyar Nemzet reported yesterday, citing Tamás Tornai, chairman of vintners association HNT.
Swiss pesticide and seed company Syngenta also expects this yearʼs grape harvest to be of excellent quality in wine regions where the harvest has not been affected by hail or grape diseases, a press release revealed yesterday.
There are currently more than 64,000 hectares of wine growing area in Hungary, Hungarian news agency MTI reported. The grape harvest amounted to 390,000 tons in 2013 and 348,000 tons in 2014, HNT data reveal, according to Magyar Nemzet. Average yield was five tons per hectare last year, down two tons from 2013 when the average yield was excellent, HNT said.
Earlier this month, Tornai told Hungarian state-owned Kossuth radio that grape harvest this year is expected to be approximately the same as last year.
