Grape harvest in Hungary this year is expected to be approximately the same as last year, Tamás Tornai, the chairman of vintners association HNT, told Hungarian state-owned Kossuth Radio yesterday, according to national news agency MTI.

The expert added that a closer estimate could be made in the coming days.

With the exception of Tokaj and Kunság, most of the country’s wine-growing regions will produce more grapes this year Tornai said, adding that in Kunság, hail destroyed part of the harvest.

Hungary’s per capita wine consumption currently stands at 23 liters per year, with imported wines accounting for less than 10% of consumed wines, Tornai added.

MTI noted that the country produced approximately 2.7 mln hectoliters of wine last year, of which almost 770,000 hectoliters were exported.
