Report: Hungary, EC reach agreement on road tenders

The Hungarian government and the European Commission reached a political agreement favorable for Hungary in a dispute over road construction tenders, Cabinet Chief János Lázár said today, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.
Speaking at a press conference today jointly organized with Corina Cretu, the European Unionʼs Commissioner for Regional Policy, the minister noted that the agreement they reached will not result in a net loss of funding for Hungary. The commissioner made a generous offer, which the Hungarian government will discuss and probably accept on Monday, MTI cited Lázár saying.
Cretu said the legal dispute over the matter, drawn out over three years, was of no use to anybody, MTI reported, adding that the agreement is in line with funding rules on financial corrections.
Lázár said yesterday that Hungary may agree to pay a fine to the EC for improper tendering of road work in order to free up HUF 500 billion in funding.
