The structure of Hungarian tourism has shifted, with more visitors arriving via low-cost airlines for the purpose of enjoying a holiday and fewer business travelers, according to a study released Tuesday by the Hungarian Association of Hotels and Restaurants. The vacationing travelers spend less than their business counterparts, the study said.

While in 2008 some 15.9% of tourists arriving in Hungary came here with the intention of doing business and 84.1% arrived to spend their holiday, in 2015 the number of business travelers dropped to 5.6% and those who were arriving here for holiday purposes went up to 94.4% according to the latest study by the association.

The association noted that vacationing tourists generally can afford to spend less, and that a growing number of vacationers arriving here are budget travelers. The association said it believes it is in the interest of the Hungarian economy to attract business tourists, and therefore it is important that a new congress center open in Budapest by 2019.
