PM: Hungary gives priority to energy prices

History

Hungary gives priority to energy prices and the final statement approved in the EU summit lays appropriate emphasis on this issue, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said after the Brussels meeting of heads of state and government on Friday.

The prime minister said he welcomed that the final statement guaranteed that decisions on choosing the specific energy mix will remain at the national level, state news agency MTI reported.

Orbán said the document draws only the framework and the European Commission should come up with specific proposals for legislation. He also said it was positive that the approved text leaves control in the hands of the head of states or governments.

The Hungarian government is flexible regarding the transparency of gas purchase contracts; at the moment a government must inform Brussels if a partner outside the EU enters into such a contract with a member state or a company. There is no obligation to request permit or approval, Orbán said, which would be unacceptable for Hungary anyway.
