A Hungarian delegation held a consultation in Vienna yesterday with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on the planned expansion of the countryʼs Paks nuclear power plant, Hungarian news agency MTI reported.

Government commissioner Attila Aszódi, who led the delegation and who is overseeing the Paks upgrade, told MTI that the IAEA is expected to help assess the extent to which Hungaryʼs infrastructure is prepared for the construction of a new nuclear power plant and it will also provide assistance to ensure that the power plant will be built and operated as safely as possible.

MTI noted that the Hungarian delegation told the agency during the talks about the progress of the Paks II project and what key steps are planned for the near future. According to Aszódi, the top officials of the IAEA are very open to cooperation with Hungary in the successful implementation of the program. The commissioner added that further expert-level consultations will be held later this year.
