Natural decrease in Hungaryʼs population slows in Q1-Q3

Although 0.2% fewer children were born in the first three quarters of the year compared to the equivalent period of 2015, the number of deaths dropped faster, by 7.6%. Hungary’s natural decrease thus moderated to 23,635 persons, some 7,525 fewer than a year earlier, according to a first release of data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH) this morning.
The number of births was 68,802 and the number of deaths came to 92,437 in the first three quarters of 2016. The number of births declined to a smaller extent while the number of deaths fell considerably, so that the natural decrease slowed from 31,160 in Q1-Q3 2015 to 23,635 persons in the first nine months of 2016, a drop of 24%, according to the KSH.
As far as the number of marriages are concerned, a 10% increase was experienced in the first nine months of the year compared to the corresponding period a year earlier, totaling 42,459 registered marriages. The peak season of August saw a setback of 17%, chiefly due to the calendar effect, as this year the month contained one less weekend than in the same month of the previous year, while the national holiday of August 20 also fell on a Saturday, according to the KSH.
