The state-owned Hungarian Electricity Works (MVM) has announced the establishment of a joint venture with German startup Electrochaea to build a grid-scale power-to-gas plant, Hungarian news agency MTI reported today.

The 10 MW plant, to be built in Hungary, uses a power-to-gas technology developed by Electrochaea. Power-to-gas is a technology that converts electrical power to a gas fuel.

Electrochaea employs a patented biocatalyst to convert low-cost and stranded electricity and carbon dioxide into pipeline-grade renewable gas. This gas can be directly injected into the existing natural gas grid.

Contracts on establishing the JV, named Power-to-Gas Hungary, were signed on October 17.
