More foreign tourists, but still outnumbered by locals

Although the number of nights international tourists spent in Hungary was up 3.6% in August compared to the same month of 2015, the number of guest nights spent by Hungarians grew at a faster rate of 6.8%, a first release of data published today by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) shows. Gross revenues of accommodation establishments – at current prices – rose by 5.6%.

The number of nights spent in Hungary by international tourists reached 1.9 million in August, while the number of nights spent by domestic tourists exceeded 2.3 million in the same month, according to data published by the KSH.

As far as international tourists are concerned, the growth in the number of nights spent here was significant in the case of visitors from Poland and the Czech Republic, according to the KSH, at 15% and 20%, respectively, while increases of between 3.9% and 8.7% were registered in the case of tourists coming from the Netherlands, Italy and the United Kingdom. Guests arriving from Germany spent 12% fewer nights in Hungarian accommodation establishments, the KSH added.

Room occupancy in hotels increased by 1.1 percentage points to 72.3%, the KSH said. Total gross revenues of accommodation establishments (HUF 49.0 billion) were 5.6% higher, it added.

In January-August, accommodation establishments registered a total of 19.628 million tourist nights, a 5.5% increase on the corresponding period of 2015, with foreign guests spending 4.0% more (9.5 million) and domestic guests 6.9% more (10.1 million) tourist nights. Room occupancy in hotels rose by an average of 1.6 percentage points to 56.1% in the period.

Accommodation establishments posted gross revenues of HUF 265.1 billion, 6.9% higher in total at current prices, the KSH said.
