The number of nights spent by international tourists increased by 20% in October compared to the same month a year earlier, while nights spent by domestic tourists decreased by 6.1%, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said today in a first reading of data. Gross revenues of accommodation establishments – calculated at current prices – grew by 15%.

The KSH attributes the visible increase in international tourists to a drop in the same month a year earlier, “due to the migrant crisis in October last year, and in parallel with a rise in domestic demand.”

Among the most significant tourism source countries – Germany, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Austria, Italy and Russia – turnover measured on the basis of domestic tourism nights grew significantly by between 10% and 34%, according to the KSH. Meanwhile, the number of domestic guests fell by 3.6%, and tourism nights spent by them by 6.1%.

Room occupancy in hotels increased by 3.8 percentage points to 59.7%, while the total gross revenue of accommodation establishments (HUF 37.8 billion) was 15% higher, according to the KSH. Within this, accommodation fee revenues (HUF 22.6 billion) increased by 17%, other revenues (HUF 7.5 billion) by 12%, and catering revenues (HUF 7.8 billion) by 12% as well, the statistics office added.

In the January-October period, compared to the equivalent period of 2015, accommodation establishments registered 5.9% more tourism nights, or a total of 24.2 million, the KSH said. Foreign guests spent 5.3% more tourism nights (12.1 million) and domestic guests 6.4% more (also 12.1 million) in accommodation establishments, while room occupancy in hotels rose by an average of 1.9 percentage points to 57.2%. Accommodation establishments reached gross revenues of HUF 341.5 billion, 7.9% higher in total at current prices, the KSH added.
