More Brits and Czechs, fewer Germans and Poles visit Hungary

Although the number of tourist nights spent in Hungarian accommodation rose 1.5% on average, nights spent by international tourists decreased by 1.4% while nights spent by domestic tourists rose 4.3% in June, as compared to a year earlier, Hungary’s Central Statistical Office (KSH) reported today in a first release of data.

Of the most important source countries for Hungarian tourism, the number of tourist nights spent by visitors from the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic and the United States increased by 8.5%, 13% and 3.9% respectively, while the number of tourist nights decreased by 11%, 16% and 15% in the case of visitors from Germany, Poland and Austria, respectively, the KSH said, adding that guests from Russia spent 15% fewer nights in Hungary. 

Room occupancy in hotels increased by 1 percentage point to 58.5%. The total gross revenue of accommodation facilities (HUF 35.9 billion) was 2.9% higher, according to the KSH. Within this, accommodation fee revenues (HUF 21.6 billion) were up by 4.2%, and other revenues (HUF 7.1 billion) by 2.7%, while catering revenues fell by 0.7% (to HUF 7.2 billion), the KSH added.

In the period January-June of this year, commercial accommodation registered 4.5% more guest nights than in the corresponding period of 2015. Foreign visitors spent 3.4% more nights, while domestic tourists spent 5.6% more nights, the KSH report continued.

Room occupancy in hotels increased by 1.6 percentage points on average in January-June, to 50.6%. Commercial accommodation facilities increased revenues at current rates by a total of 6.6% to a gross HUF 168.5 billion in the first half.
