MNB governor urges Parliament to elect an MPC member

Government

National Bank of Hungary (MNB) governor György Matolcsy called for the soonest possible election of a new member of the Monetary Policy Council (MPC) to be elected as soon as possible by Parliament, in a letter written to Speaker of Parliament László Kövér, the MNB told Hungarian news agency MTI yesterday.

Matolcsy has written the letter after Monetary Council member Andrea Bártfai-Máger resigned from her post as of July 6, 2016, because of her appointment as government commissioner for postal affairs and national financial services.

Head of the Prime Ministerʼs Office János Lázár announced on June 30 the retirement of Zsuzsanna Németh, who until now was responsible for postal affairs and national financial services as state secretary.

The candidate nominated for Monetary Council membership is elected by Parliament after a hearing by Parliamentʼs economic committee.

Under the regulations in effect, the external members of the Monetary Council are nominated by Parliamentʼs economic committee.
