The National Bank of Hungary (MNB) announced today it had purchased about HUF 345 million of artwork under a program to acquire national art treasures, Hungarian news agency MTI reported.

The central bank acquired a granite table by Marcel Breuer for USD 150,000, a set of silverware crafted for Earl Teleki Samuel for HUF 6 million, works amassed by the private collector Rudolf Bedo for HUF 52 million and the private collector Ferenc Kiss for HUF 235 million, as well as a daguerreotype of the Hungarian statesman Lajos Kossuth taken in Boston in the spring of 1852 for USD 23,000.

MNB made the purchases as part of its "Depositary Program", launched in January 2014, which seeks to recover important artworks exported from Hungary and buy treasures locally to keep them in the country.
