Ministry: Uber quits Hungary rather than be legal

Hungary’s National Development Ministry alleged in announcement today that U.S.-based ride-sharing application Uber would rather leave the country than engage in lawful operations, enter fair market competition with taxi drivers and pay taxes appropriately, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.

Reacting to Uber’s announcement today that it decided it must leave the country due the changing legal environment, the ministry stressed that the Hungarian government supports innovative solutions, but also insists that players of the transport sector should meet the same requirements and standards, should operate lawfully and pay the necessary taxes, MTI reported.
According to the ministry, Uber conducted operations in Hungary without abiding Hungarian laws, thus gained competitive advantage. The ministry claimed that, in some other countries, the operations of Uber have been banned due to this behavior, MTI reported.
The ministry stressed that the Hungarian government changed the legal environment in order to “legalize” Uber’s operations, but todayʼs announcement by the company shows that it is not willing to engage in “fair market competition and lawful operations”.
