MEKH fines E.ON, EDF Démász
The Hungarian Energy and Utilities Regulatory Office (MEKH) fined French-owned electricity distributor EDF Démász HUF 8.5 million and German-owned peer E.ON HUF 7.5 mln on charges of violating consumer protection rules, MEKH said today, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.
MEKH charged the two companies for failing to observe regulations on gauging customer waiting times in their offices, and as a result, the data submitted to MEKH was inaccurate, MTI said.
The companies failed to gauge waiting times regularly, used days when there were fewer customers as reference points and did not register waiting times for some customers.
MEKH instructed the companies to observe the rules.
The Hungarian government said earlier that it is pushing out foreign firms to keep utility bills affordable and ensure a secure energy supply, but critics say their interference does more harm than good, according to an in-depth report by the Budapest Business Journal.
