Hungarian farmers are expecting to launch exports of meat of the domestic Mangalitsa pig breed to the United States, with the first introductory shipment already on its way to Houston, Texas - Péter Tóth, head of the Hungarian National Association of Mangalica Breeders, was quoted as saying yesterday by news agency MTI.

Approximately 60,000 Mangalitsa pigs are sold in Hungary annually; however, only about 25,000 of these are butchered commercially, the rest being sold or butchered on family farms, MTI noted.

Tóth stressed that the embargo against Russia is prompting Hungary to search for new markets for selling the Hungarian-raised meat.

Hungarian meat producer Pick Szeged was reported to have acquired an export license for Mangalitsa to the United States.
