Lázár positive Paks talks in Brussels tomorrow
Hungary’s Cabinet Chief János Lázár says he is optimistic about achieving “significant” agreements in Brussels tomorrow in discussions with European Commission officials about plans to upgrade Hungary’s sole nuclear plant in Paks .
At his weekly press conference today, the cabinet chief said he is positive of reaching “significant” agreements in Brussels in connection with the proceedings of the upgrade.
EC officials are still withholding their permissions for the Paks project for a variety of reasons, including questions of whether the project makes sense from a market point of view. If the plan is not competitive, it constitutes a state subsidy, which could be enough for the EC to stop the project.
But Lázár said that the ECʼs questions are being addressed. He said that the “hands of the government are tied” by contracts signed in past decades that say only Russian technology can be used for building nuclear plants, origo.hu reported. Lázár added that the EC will insist that Paks 2 must not belong to the Hungarian Electricity Works MVM, and he appeared ready to agree to that, and to make other concessions.
“Solutions need to be found that are acceptable for Brussels and meets the requirements of Hungarian energy security as well”, Lázár said.
