KSH: Hungary’s retail sales up 6.8% y-o-y in May

Hungary’s volume of sales in retail shops in May increased by 6.8% over the same period last year according to raw data, Hungary’s Central Statistical Office (KSH) said today on its website.

A year ago, the Sunday closings law was in effect, and experts say that had an impact on shopping habits. Although the KSH broke down figures based on “calendar effects”, it is not clear whether the data is comparable. Experts have said it may take some time before a real comparison of pre- and post-Sunday closings is possible, although retail sales seem to be steadily improving.

Based on the KSH adjustment for calendar effects, the volume of sales increased by 4.4% year-on-year in specialized and non-specialized food shops, by 6.8% in non-food retail shops, and by 9.0% in automotive fuel retailing, KSH reported.

In January-May 2016, the volume of sales – also according to calendar adjusted data – increased by 5.1% year-on-year, KSH concluded.
