KSH: Hungary’s jobless rate drops to 5.8% in Feb-Apr

Hungary’s unemployment rate dropped by 1.7 percentage points to 5.8% in the period of February to April, compared to the same period a year earlier, Hungary’s Central Statistical Office (KSH) reported today. Experts maintain that the real unemployment rate is higher than the official figure, which counts Hungarians working abroad and people working for the stateʼs workfare program as employed.

The unemployment rate of 15–74 year-old men decreased by 2 percentage points to 5.6%, while that of women dropped by 1.4 percentage points to 6%, KSH data show.

The average duration of unemployment was 18.4 months; 48.8% of unemployed people had been searching for a job for one year or more, i.e. were long-term unemployed, according to KSH.

In another report published by KSH today, the office said the number of employed people was 153,000 more than a year earlier, while the employment rate of people aged 15–64 increased to 65.6%, the improvement in the employment indicators of men was stronger.
