KSH: Hungary’s jobless rate down to 6.4% in Aug-Oct

The unemployment rate in Hungary was down 0.7 percentage points to 6.4% in the period of August - October compared to the same period a year earlier, Hungary’s Central Statistical Office (KSH) reported today. The figure includes Hungarians working abroad and people working for the stateʼs workfare program as being employed. Experts say the actual unemployment rate is higher.
Men had a lower level of unemployment, while the improvement was higher for women, KSH said.
Data include people employed as fostered workers in public work schemes. Fostered workers are employed by the government and paid less than minimum wage to work at jobs such as street sweepers or metro ticket takers.
The unemployment rate of men in the age group of 15-74 was down by 0.6 percentage points to 6.2% in the period, while the rate of women in the same age group was down by 0.9 percentage points to 6.6%, data by KSH reveal.
“The unemployment rate of the 15–24 age group decreased by 3.6 percentage points to 16.2%, but one fifth of unemployed people still belonged to this age group. The unemployment rate of those aged 25–54, i.e. persons belonging to the ‘best working age’ decreased by 0.5 percentage points to 5.6%, and the rate for persons aged 55–64 also decreased by 0.5 percentage points to 5.7%,” KSH said.
The average duration of unemployment is still 19.1 months, KSH reported, adding that 49.2% of unemployed people had been searching for a job for one year or more, i.e. were long-term unemployed.
“The data are calculated in line with International Labour Organization standards and include people with all forms of employment contracts who have worked more than one hour a week during the period or are on sick leave or paid absence,” Hungarian news agency MTI said.
