The unemployment rate in Hungary dropped by 1.2 percentage points to 6.2% in the period of November 2015 to January 2016, compared to the same period a year earlier, the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH) reported this morning.

Experts say the actual unemployment rate is higher than the official figure, which counts Hungarians working abroad and people working for the stateʼs workfare program as being employed.

According to data from KSH, the number of unemployed people was 279,000, some 51,000 fewer than a year earlier. Men were characterized by a lower level of unemployment, and the improvement was also higher in their case, KSH added.

The number of 15- to 74-year-old unemployed men decreased by 29,000 to 148,000, and their unemployment rate by 1.4 percentage points to 6%, while the number of unemployed women declined by 22,000 to 131,000, and their unemployment rate by 1.1 percentage points to 6.4%, KSH said.

According to the administrative data of the National Employment Service, at the end of December 2015, the total number of registered jobseekers was 359,000, which means a 13% decrease, KSH added.
