KSH: Hungary’s CPI down 0.2% in June, y-o-y

Hungary’s Consumer Prices index dropped 0.2% on average in June as compared to the same month a year earlier, although as compared to the previous month, CPI was up 0.2% on average, and in the first half of this year CPI was up 0.1% as compared to the base period a year earlier, Hungary’s Central Statistical Office (KSH) reported today.

In year-on-year terms people paid 0.4% less for food, with pork prices down 17.2%, the price of cheese dropping by 8.1% and milk prices decreasing by 6.5%. Meanwhile, the price of sugar increased by 24.1%, edible oil prices were up by 7.1%, and the prices of seasonal food items grew by 5.0%, according to data by KSH.

According to KSH, alcoholic beverages and tobacco prices were up 1.9%; services grew by 1.6%; consumer durables increased by 0.7%; and clothing and footwear grew by 0.5% on average. Consumers paid 3.9% less for other goods – including 10.4% less for vehicle gas. The prices of electricity, gas and other fuels were reduced by 0.1%, KSH added.

As compared to the preceding month this year, food prices were 0.5% lower, predominantly due to the 3.3% price decrease of seasonal food items – potatoes, fresh vegetables and fruits, according to KSH. The prices of services increased by 0.3%, and prices of recreational services by 2.3%, from May to April, KSH said, and clothing and footwear prices were up by 0.1%. Compared to the previous month, the prices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco as well as electricity, gas and other fuels were unchanged overall in May, KSH data shows.
