ISPs set to offer cheap internet for the needy
All Hungarian internet service providers are reported to be preparing to start offering cheaper basic internet access in Hungary from the beginning of 2017, according to a report in Hungarian economic daily Világgazdaság today.
A new basic package is expected to be introduced which will be at least 15% cheaper than the lowest rates currently offered by service providers for both mobile and cable internet services, the paper reported based on information from the secretariat of the governmentʼs Digital Welfare Program, led by the prime ministerʼs commissioner Tamás Deutsch.
In an attempt to offer help to people who have had no internet access so far, the planned basic package would become available for people who have not had a mobile internet subscription in the previous 12 months or have had no internet subscription at their given address, according to the paper.
Details of the new package are currently being discussed by the secretariat and service providers. The proposal is set to be ready in November, the report added.
The Digital Welfare Program was launched after an online national consultation that was spurred by tens of thousands of people flocking onto Hungarian streets in 2014 to demonstrate against the governmentʼs planned taxing of the internet.
