German-owned snack foods maker Intersnack Hungary is buying about 15,000 tons of locally grown wheat this year, a spokesman for the company told Hungarian news agency MTI today.

Wheat purchases have risen about 25% in three years as demand for Intersnack Hungaryʼs main products, pretzels and crackers, stagnates in Hungary but grows on foreign markets, said Gábor Szabó, the companyʼs coordinator of corporate relations and market research.

Intersnack Hungary, the local subsidiary of the German-headquartered Intersnack Group, a major manufacturer of potato chips and snacks in Europe, turns out about 12,500 tons of product a year at its plant in Győr. Last year, the company had revenue of almost HUF 12 billion, through popular snack brands such as Chio and POM-BÄR.
