IAEA review finds safety improvements at Paks
Hungary’s sole nuclear power plant at Paks is reported to have improved its operational safety, operator MVM Paksi Atomerőmű said yesterday, citing a report by an Operational Safety Review Team (OSART) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), according to Hungarian news agency MTI.
Assessing work the Paks plant carried out in response to an OSART mission in 2014, the team recently concluded a five-day follow-up mission at the plant.
“Paks Nuclear Power Plant has worked effectively to address recommendations and suggestions identified by the OSART mission in 2014, and we saw good progress in the plantʼs operational safety,” MTI quoted team leader Fuming Jiang as saying in an IAEA statement issued after the mission was completed.
The IAEA nevertheless still found room for further improvement.
“We also noted that more work is needed for some recommendations and suggestions to be fully implemented, and we encourage the plant to continue its work to ensure sustainable improvement,” Jiang added, according to the news agency.
The IAEA concluded that recommendations it had issued for improvements have been implemented, such as improving control and storage of maintenance equipment and materials, enhancement of identification and reporting of deficiencies in systems and components, as well as better management of chemicals and other substances.
The agency added that the OSART team said recommendations and suggestions to reinforce safety-conscious behavior among staff, improve the operational experience program and improve contractor management “still require further work,” according to MTI.
