Hungaryʼs jobless rate drops further to 4.9%

The number of unemployed people in Hungary decreased by 1.5 percentage points to 4.9% in the July-September period of the year, compared to the corresponding period of 2015, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said today in a first release of data. The employment rate among people aged 15–64 increased to 67.1%, the KSH said in a separate report issued today.
The number of unemployed men aged 15–74 decreased by 30,000 to 122,000, and their unemployment rate by 1.3 percentage points to 4.9%, while the number of unemployed women fell by 36,000 to 105,000, and their unemployment rate by 1.8 percentage points to 5%, the KSH reported.
The average duration of joblessness was 18.1 months; 48.1% of unemployed people had been searching for a job for one year or more, i.e. were classified as long-term unemployed, according to data from the KSH.
At the end of September, as compared to a year earlier, the total number of registered job-seekers was 282,000, which represents a 17.5% decrease, according to administrative data of the National Employment Service, the KSH added.
A total of 4,346,000 people were employed in the 15–64 age group in July-September, their employment rate growing by 2.3 percentage points to 67.1%, the KSH said. The number of employed men aged 15–64 increased by 2.6% to 2,356,000, their employment rate rising by 2.3 percentage points to 73.6%. The number of employed women aged 15–64 increased by 3.0% to 1,989,000, their employment rate rising 2.4 percentage points to 60.8%.
