Hungary negotiates with Serbia on privatization of agribusiness

Hungary is currently in talks with Serbia on the privatization of a troubled Serbian agribusiness, ministerial commissioner Gyula Budai said following talks with Serbian economy minister Zeljko Sertic in Belgrade on Monday, state news agency MTI reported.

Hungaryʼs government would like to support the purchase of Mezőgazdasági – based in Senta, an area of Serbia with an ethnic Hungarian minority  by a Hungarian peer – Budai said. Reaching a mutual agreement on the privatization, rather than calling a tender, would be the more favorable option for the Hungarians, he added.

Mezőgazdasági has about 541 hectares of its own farmland and a further 2,400 hectares of irrigated land that it rents from the state. Saving the company would preserve almost 200 jobs.
