Hungary has lowest spending on education in the region
Hungary’s spending on education compared to GDP has been decreasing steadily since 2010, news portal 444.hu revealed yesterday, with spending levels reaching the lowest in the region.
In 2010, Hungary spent a larger portion of the GDP on education than Czech Republic and Slovakia and just as much as Poland. All levels of the education system have experienced cutbacks since 2005, according to data published by Eurostat.
Further analysis of the data revealed that the spending per capita increased during the same period, due to the decreasing number of pupils and teachers. Meanwhile, according to the news portal, the performance of Hungarian students (an indicator of the quality of the education system) has decreased significantly compared to OECD countries when examined using the PISA method, but a decline in the performance has been measured in comparison to an earlier domestic survey in 2009 as well.
