Hungarians make 5.53 million foreign trips in Q3

Hungarians made 5.53 million trips abroad in the third quarter of 2016, 7.7% more than in the corresponding period last year, a compilation of data released Friday by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) shows, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.

The data show that 3.1 million trips were one-day trips and 2.35 million were for a longer time period. Hungarians in total spent 18.35 million days traveling, with the average trip lasting 3.3 days. The total time spent traveling was up 4.8% compared to Q3 2015. 

Hungarians spent HUF 250.75 billion on traveling abroad, 16% more than in the base period. Around 82% of the spending was related to tourist trips, 11% for purchasing goods and services, and 7.7% for work or study-related trips.  

Some 3.25 million trips were tourist trips, up by 2.2% compared to the base period. Around 1.42 million trips were for purchasing goods and services, and 0.78 million were work-related. 

Hungarians made most trips to Austria, making 1.67 million trips out of the 5.53 million total. Slovakia was also highly popular with 946,000 trips, followed by Romania with 528,000, Ukraine with 492,000, Croatia with 467,000, and Germany with 268,000.

Foreignersʼ visits to Hungary in Q3 numbered 18.02 million, up by 9.3% annually. Foreigners in Hungary spent HUF 590 bln on travel costs, giving Hungary a net HUF 339 bln surplus in terms of travel expenditures.
