Hungarian livestock numbers rise in last three years

The number of livestock and poultry rose in all categories from 2013 to 2016, a summary of preliminary data published by the Central Statistics Office (KSH) shows, according to a report by the Hungarian news agency MTI.

There were 821,000 cattle in Hungary in 2016, up from 751,000 in 2013. Within that, the number of cows rose from 331,000 to 371,000.

The number of hogs was 2.933 million this year, up by 2.3% compared to three years ago. The number of breeding sows was put at 178,000.

Sheep stocks were up by 7.7% at 1.237 mln, with ewes numbering 805,000. The number of goats rose from 89,100 to 98,000. Out of poultry the number of chickens was up from 30.22 mln at 33.31 mln. Goose numbers also rose from 3.83 mln to 3.90 mln.

The number of ducks saw a significant increase from 4.32 mln to 5.66 mln while the number of turkeys increased by almost half from 2.19 mln to 3.09 mln.
