Hungarian-born European bank head dies
Alexandre (Sándor) Lamfalussy (pictured), the Hungarian-born former head of the European Monetary Institute, the forerunner of the European Central Bank (ECB), has died at the age 86, his family told Belgian news agency Belga yesterday.
Lamfalussy, a Belgian citizen, died on Saturday. The National Bank of Hungary (MNB) established the Sándor Lamfalussy Prize in his honor in 2013, which recognizes “outstanding professional performance and lifetime achievements on the international scene that influence the central bank’s operations, international monetary policy in general and the environment for financial stability”. The first recipient of the prize, awarded last year, was Austrian central bank governor Ewald Nowotny.
