Hungarian beer consumption on the rise

The amount of beer consumed by Hungarians rose 4% last year, reaching 6.1 million hectoliters, brewerʼs association MSSZ said yesterday, according to reports. Including exports, sales came to 6.5 million hectolitres, Hungarian news agency MTI reported.

The data is collected from the sales of the four biggest brewers in Hungary – Borsodi, owned by Molson Coors; Dreher, a unit of SABMiller; Pécsi Sörfőzde, a subsidiary of Austrian peer Ottakringer; and Heineken Hungária – as well as distributor Carlsberg Hungary, MTI added.

Sales of premium brands rose faster than cheaper brands, as the former saw a growth of 10-12%, while the latter only 8%. Sales of mid-range brands and flavored beer were both down 3%, according to MTI.

MSSZ head Attila Schillinger is optimistic about the following months’ for the brewing industry as a hot summer is expected and a number of big sporting events this year could further raise consumption.
