The average monthly upkeep of a home was HUF 40,300 in 2015, which meant that households spent on average 22% of their income on utilities and other costs (excluding rent), according to a survey of homeowners conducted by the Central Statistical Office (KSH), cited by news agency MTI.

The KSH found that people with higher incomes spend more in absolute terms on household upkeep - which includes public utilities, common charges, insurance and taxes, but excludes rent. However, this represents a smaller portion of their total income compared to those with lower incomes.

People with incomes in the top decile spend HUF 52,100 or 13.3% of their total income on upkeep every month, compared to the HUF 27,200 per month spent by the bottom decile, which nevertheless represents 36.6% of monthly income in that group.

Energy costs on average consume 13.7% of total household income, but only 7.7% for people in the top decile, compared to 24.9% for those in the bottom decile.

A breakdown by household and building type showed that single parents raising children living in prefabricated communist-era flats spent the largest part of their income, 29.1%, on household costs.

The survey found that 32% of respondents said paying household  costs was not a problem for them, compared to 68% who said it was a heavy burden on their income.

Average monthly rent of a non-municipal property, which was not included in standard upkeep costs in the survey, was HUF 68,000 in Budapest, HUF 44,000 in county seats, and HUF 34,000 in smaller cities last year, according to the KSH.
