Infrastructural developments worth HUF 7.9 billion at the Győr-Gönyű port on the Danube, northwestern Hungary, are expected to be completed in June 2016, creating new ship berths and a direct railway-waterway transport link, Ákos Kara, ministerial commissioner for the investment state secretary of the National Development Ministry, said on Friday.

HUF 5.8 bln of the investment costs will be covered through European Union and national funding.

Kara said the government had declared the investment of strategic importance. Preparations for the projected started in 2013 and the contractor consortium took over the area in August.

László Sál, CEO of construction company A-Híd and representative of the contractor consortium, said the portʼs capacity will be expanded by two-thirds through the development.
