Green number plates become available for electric and hybrid vehicles

Hungarian motorists with electric or hybrid vehicles have become eligible to apply for green number plates for their vehicles, Hungarian economic daily Világgazdaság reported today.

Speaking with the paper, the Hungary’s National Development Ministry said that replacing the old number plates with green ones will cost motorists HUF 8,500 each. However, the ministry said it would be “worthwhile” to wait until the government decides on incentives for the bearer of the green license plate, before weighing the cost against benefits.

Hungary recently drafted a blueprint for the regulatory and support framework required to popularize electromobility, entitled the Jedlik Ányos Plan, the paper said. The plan outlines advantages offered electric vehicles such as the use of bus lanes, reduced parking and motorway fees, and tax breaks, the paper added.

According to the paper, such incentives could be introduced by the end of November.
