Government allocates HUF 5 bln to close Déli railway yard, expand Kelenföld station

City

HUF 5 bln has been allocated in the proposed 2017 budget bill to remove the railway yard at Budapestʼs Southern Railway Station (Déli), though not the station, from the rail network and expand capacity at the Kelenföld Station in the south of the capital, Hungarian news agency MTI reported yesterday.

“The allocation will be used for investments to expand the capacity of Kelenfold station and separate the railway yard of Déli station from the railway network and transfer the area to a new asset manager for preparations for construction work,” the bill states, according to MTI.

Hungaryʼs government earlier mandated ministers to draw up a study on the impact of shutting down Déli and expanding Kelenföld and to draft a concept for the stationʼs conversion into a sport and recreation centre.

Kelenföld station lies on the terminus of Budapestʼs new Metro 4 line.
