Hungaryʼs bus manufacturing capacity could facilitate the interests of the countryʼs industrial sector if changes occur in public transportation and orders continue to come in, Cabinet Chief János Lázár, said yesterday, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.

As part of a future national transportation strategy the government hopes to establish a meaningful cooperation with public transport service operators, to strengthen the Hungarian industry, Lázár said during his regular weekly press conference.

The government is looking to revive the national vehicle industry, with a focus on bus manufacturing and this segment could become “the new flagship of national industry”, said Lázár, adding that in the coming years there could be an annual demand for 1,000-1,200 new buses from public transport operators.

He noted that the government has some room to maneuver in its support of bus manufacturing capacity, for example the Hungarian Development Bank (MFB) has a HUF 180 billion funding framework for the endeavor.

Lázár believes seven to eight, or even possibly ten Hungarian companies could be involved in bus manufacturing in the coming years.

Speaking about what solution the Budapest Municipal Council could pursue to provide replacement bus services while renovating the capitalʼs Metro 3 line, Lázár said they were “only asking Budapest to give the national industry a chance”.
