GMO-free milk, meat and eggs to be produced in Hungary

Hungary has plans in place to produce GMO-free milk, meat and eggs, and has already made the initial steps required in the case of milk, farm ministry state secretary István Nagy said yesterday, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.

During a press conference, Nagy said that, following the decision made in Brussels in which European Union member countries can freely decide on whether to ban or restrict genetically modified products, Hungary has defined new targets.

Since meat, milk and eggs, and food products derived from them, are a part of daily consumption, the government has made a mandate to render these GMO-free. The first step involves the replacement of import soya, used as a main component in animal feed.

Since it is largely imported from South America where it is grown using GMO methods, a new program has been launched to use another source of protein in animal food, Nagy added.
